** Health Care Reform – Options for Self Employed Artists
————————————————————
Please welcome Deena Dooney, of DDIBenefits, ddibenefits.com. She will focus on the types of plans available as well as credits to offset the cost of those plans for those making $40,000 or less per year. Take this opportunity to learn about options for health care, as well as how to be fiscally wise. This might be of the least attractive (albeit necessary) aspects of small business, but one that we all must take into consideration in the next year.

** President’s Message – What do you know about Health Care Reform?
————————————————————

By Cheryl Smith
Concern weighed heavily in my chest, as I reviewed a Gallup poll taken June 20-24. The poll revealed 43% of Americans were basically unaware of the requirements embedded in Obamacare, or HIX, the Healthcare Reform Exchange, which will open October 1st of this year. “What does this have to do with me?”, you might ask. A lot, it turns out, especially if you are a small business owner. That’s when federal healthcare reform will require most people who can afford coverage to have it–or pay a penalty–while also offering tax credits to income-qualified people.
Most people in the individual market who are not on Medicare will need to shop for a new policy, or have their insurers bump them on to the most similar plan. Under Obamacare, uninsured Americans will face a phased-in penalty structure. In 2014, the fine will be $95 per person, and will climb to $695 in 2016 for people who earn between $9,500 to $37,000 a year. From there, states Henry Blodget of Business Insider, the fines increase: Less than $9,500 income = $0 $ 9,500 – $37,000 income = $695; $50,000 income = $1,000; $75,000 income = $1,600; $100,000 income = $2,250; $125,000 income = $2,900; $150,000 income = $3,500; $175,000 income = $4,100; The Good News for us is that Bruce McKay has arranged for a knowledgable insurance professional to address our September meeting to answer your questions about healthcare reform. See you Sept. 10!

Prerequisite: Metals I or equivalent. Price of $325 includes materials fee of $80, which includes reticulation and Sterling silver for the students to keep.
